The Sunday Salon: The Gift
I spent a lovely hour lounging in bed this afternoon, reading Patrick O'Leary's (thus-far) wonderful book, The Gift.
It's told as a story in a story, with a Tale Teller sharing the tale to a ship of fishermen and their Captain on still night. His characters also share stories, that fill in bits of back story, history and myth the reader needs to know about this land and it's people. The result has been, not the tangled mess you might imagine from my garbled description, but a beautifully told treasure of a tale. I'm about a quarter of the way through, and am excited to continue reading it, to see if this holds true through-out the book.
I've been on a reading binge these past two weeks, reading 5 books this past week and 4 the previous week. Granted three of them were juvenile fiction (Rick Riordan's AWESOME series about Percy Jackson and the Olympians), but still that's not a bad record for a two weeks that were also filled with special ed preschool and World of Warcraft!
I'm considering, since I'm no longer taking the time to review, at least posting a monthly list of what I've read. I can rate each book with stars, maybe write a line or two about the noteworthy ones and at least blog something. It's just something I've been mulling over.
In the meantime, perhaps I'll become a regular in the Sunday Salon. Or not--given my lackadaisical attitude over the past few years toward anything other than work, reading, gaming and my family. Happily, there are many others that ARE regularly participating in Deb's wonderful venture, as you can see by heading over to the Salon and taking a peek.

You're in, Gypsi!
I like the idea of the monthly--or weekly, or biweekly--quick list of books. A sentence would be all you need.
